Material: water hyacinth
These placemats are made from plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully like nature.
Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows along rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but has also been introduced to Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen leads to the death of all living creatures underwater, which is why the plants have to be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material that is available in abundance at Soeji for many woven goods!
This placemat is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting local producers, Soeji attaches great importance to fair pay and good working conditions. In the factories where they source their goods, they only work with adult and experienced artisans. No harmful chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process causes hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. Soeji ensures all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
