The Sewu rectangular rug is carefully handcrafted from seagrass and recycled plastic. The complex weaving process requires a lot of patience and practice from the experienced artisans who specialize in working with such plant fibers.

What basket makers commonly refer to as “seaweed” is not actually an (under)water plant, but rather a small, palm-like plant that is common on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of plants often cultivated by humans are separated, cut into strips, dried and then processed by hand.
