The sustainable material: water hyacinth

Water hyacinth is a tropical plant that thrives in lakes and rivers. Originally from South America, it has spread throughout Southeast Asia, where it is considered an invasive weed. Its rapid growth forms dense mats on the water's surface that block light and reduce oxygen levels, threatening aquatic life. To mitigate this, the plants are regularly removed. After harvesting, the leaves are trimmed and the sturdy stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. This process creates a highly sustainable and abundant raw material that is perfect for making our handmade woven products.

Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours . We only work with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced, adult craftsmen. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. Since all steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly causes any greenhouse gas emissions . We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
