➤ The sustainable main material: rattan

This rapidly renewable raw material is obtained from rattan palms, which grow as climbing vines in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and trunks are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The interior of the branches and trunks is used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets, or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for intricate basketry, such as the well-known "Wienerweber" (Vienna weaving). Since rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing encourages local communities to preserve healthy, natural forests.

About the brand:

When selecting local production partners, we emphasize fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced artisans of legal age. Older people, in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture benefit from jobs in artisanal crafts, allowing them to use the skills they learned at a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a living with this work. Since all steps are performed by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.

➤ The production process: From raw material to the finished basket

The baskets are carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Lombok. Thick rattan fibers are woven together with narrow strips of rattan bark, creating a sturdy and decorative structure. To achieve the basket's perfectly round shape, the material is wrapped around a custom-made wooden frame that defines its shape and size. Each basket takes approximately three hours to make and requires a high degree of patience, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
