The sustainable main material: seagrass
The seagrass used by our production partners grows in dense meadows on the seabed in the coastal areas of the Indian Ocean. The long, flexible leaves are carefully harvested by hand, cut into narrow strips and then gently dried. This natural process gives the material its characteristic strength and durable structure, making it ideal for producing high-quality handmade products. Thanks to its natural beauty and environmental friendliness, seagrass is the perfect choice for stylish, sustainable home accessories that combine aesthetics with environmental responsibility .
Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we place importance on fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We only work with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced, adult craftsmen. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly causes any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
The production process: from raw material to the finished lampshade
Our Lampung lampshades are made by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Java. They begin by manually shaping a metal frame that serves as a stable foundation. They then carefully weave the thinly cut and dried seagrass fibers, which have been tied together into thick, fringed strands, into the frame using jute twine.
