The sustainable main material: banana fiber

Banana fiber is a natural, untreated plant fiber that feels wonderfully natural. This abundant, renewable raw material comes from banana trees that are widely grown in Indonesia. Its fibrous bark separates from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried in the sun for about a week, which naturally creates the intense brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which are processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we place importance on fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We only work with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced, adult craftsmen. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly causes any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.

The production process: From raw material to the finished basket

For our baskets, skilled artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java carefully and meticulously weave banana fiber strands around a specially crafted wooden frame that defines the exact shape and size of the basket.
