Our products are artfully crafted individual pieces. Due to the hand-made nature and natural material variations, they may vary slightly in size, color and shape.
The sustainable main material: raffia
The raffia used by our production partners is harvested from the leaves of the Gebang palm, which thrives in the tropical, swampy regions of Indonesia. The fan-shaped leaves are carefully collected without damaging them and then cut into fine fibers. These fibers are gently sun-dried to enhance their natural strength and either woven directly into baskets or twisted into cords, which are also used in various handmade home accessories such as placemats. Raffia not only represents sustainable and stylish interior design, but also preserves centuries-old craftsmanship and promotes the responsible use of natural resources.
Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
This lampshade is handmade in Bali, Indonesia.
When selecting our local production partners, we place importance on fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We only work with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced, adult craftsmen. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly causes any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
The production process: from raw material to the finished lampshade
Our Tampah lampshades are made by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Bali. First, they hand-form a metal frame into the desired shape, which serves as a stable foundation. Then, with great precision, they weave the finely cut and dried bast fibers into the frame.
