The main sustainable material: Raffia

The raffia used by our production partners is harvested from the leaves of the Gebang palm, which thrives in the tropical, swampy regions of Indonesia. The fan-shaped leaves are carefully gathered without causing any damage and then cut into fine fibers. These fibers are gently sun-dried to enhance their natural strength and are either woven directly into baskets or twisted into cords, which are also used in various handcrafted accessories such as bags. Raffia not only represents sustainable and stylish home decor but also preserves centuries-old craftsmanship and promotes the responsible use of natural resources.

The production process: From raw material to finished pillow

Our cushions are handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Java. Using traditional needle weaving techniques, they intricately weave dried raft fibers into a perfectly square cushion cover. Each piece is then generously filled with coconut fiber and cotton to ensure lasting shape and softness. Creating a single cushion takes approximately 1.5 hours and requires exceptional patience and craftsmanship.

Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced artisans of legal age. In particular, older people who can no longer work in agriculture benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they learned in their youth to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a living through this work. Because all steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.
