Material: water hyacinth
Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows along rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced to Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all underwater life to die, which is why the plants have to be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is an abundant, sustainable raw material for many basketry products.
